have we, as a hype-obsessed culture having recently experienced the mid-term elections (first 100 days), coldplay’s follow-up to parachutes, the macbook air and the 3g iphone, failed to learn the primary rule of hype? reality < hype.

Exactly what I was talking about in those posts about Vogue earlier. The whole thing is built on hype and is overblown, from that particular thing to all of the above and more.

No one disputes that the Vogue issue was “hyped” - well I don’t at least. Duh, they are in business to make money. But the fact that you keep talking about it as hyped is undermining the larger issue - the whitewashed media. It’s like you’re saying “oh whatever, its not a big deal, I can name 3 black models so obviously this is isn’t anything special.” I don’t have the issue of Vogue, nor do I want it. But do I think this is deserving of whatever hype preceded and follows it? Absolutely. It’s a means (albeit a sort of shallow one) to an important end, unlike most of the things mentioned in the above quote.

Hi, my name is Kia. This is my Tumblr. Ask me something. I will answer it with half-truths and sarcasm. I run Trivia Tuesday. I also started these Tumblr groups but, you know, they kinda got old or something. But look at them anyway: Shake and Bake. And also this one: WashingtRon, City of the Future. And this one: LOLcabulary.com.
